Everest Base Camp Trek -14 Days
Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, which is known as 'Sagarmatha' the goddess mother of the world, in Nepal, has long been the greatest attraction for nature lovers and trekkers all over the world.Solukhumbu, the heartland of Everest region, has thus been the most famous trekking destination in the world. Mt. Everest, Solukhumbu and sturdy and happy Sherpa people have been the integral part of the Himalayan mystique.
You can have a spectacular glance at unbelievable peaks, visit Buddhist monasteries and friendly Sherpa villages on this trek. Perhaps the YETI! Local people believe that Pangboche Monastery actually has in possession of the real scalp of the Yeti.
As we proceed slowly to allow for maximum acclimatization, we will have planty of opportunity to visit the monasteries and Sherpa homes. In fact most of our crew come from the Sherpa households in this area. Incredible views of Everest and the surrounding peaks are the inescapable fare while we ascend Kala Patthar.
Day 1 Phakding 2250m 2 walking hrs
We take STOL flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800m.), the tiny airstrip built by Sir Edmund Hillary and the local Sherpas in the sixties. The flight itself is a wonderful trip. We lunch at Lukla. We then take an easy walk to Phakding and camp.
Day 2 Namche Bazaar 3444m 7 walking hrs
After four hour of easy straight trail and three hours of ascent, we reach Namche Bazaar where we lunch and camp at the same spot on the heart of village. As we climb we have our first views of Everest (8,848m), Nuptse (7,879m). After lunch we rest the day to enjoy the splendid Sherpa hospitality.
Day 3 Namche Bazaar Rest and acclimatization
A rest day here to allow maximum acclimatization on our day to Mt. Everest Base Camp. A pleasant day can be spent exploring the village, talking to the Sherpas and simply marvelling at the incredible scenery.
Day 4 Thyangboche Monastery 3875m 5 walking hrs
We walk with beautiful view under the soaring peaks of Thamserku and steadily descend to the Imja Khola and lunch at Phunki Thanga along a very pleasant trail. Here in Phunki, we see series of water driven prayer wheels. After lunch, 2 hrs. ascent will take us to Tyangboche Monastery (3,875m) and the views are magnificent on the way. The Monastery is surrounded by mountains, yaks graze high pasture and the monks drone through their prayers. Surely this spots is one of the most beautiful in the world.
Day 5 Thyangboche Rest and Acclimatization
We enjoy the rest day to view the magnificent scenery that surrounds us. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Tabotse (6,367m) and the most beautiful of them all, Ama Dablam (6,856m). We can visit Monastery and the monks who will happily show us around. This spot is just for a rest day.
Day 6 Dingboche 4360m 5 walking hrs
We move forward up to Imja Khola valley Pangboche (3,900m) and lunch. After lunch we visit the Monastery and look at the Yeti scalp. We again move to the summer village of Dingboche. For the whole day, we have superb scenery.
Day 7 Dingboche Rest and Acclimatization
We enjoy the rest for acclimatization which helps us an excellent chance to ascending Kala Patthar. We can do a number of excursions from this village. A 2 hrs. walk to the huts at Chukung (4,700m) will take us to the glaciers flowing off Nuptse and Lhotse. We camp at the foot of Ama Dablam.
Day 8 Lobuje 4930m 4 walking hrs
We move up a small ridge and contour around the base of Khumbu Glacier and lunch at Dhugla (4,600m). After lunch, we take a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of the glacier from where the views are stunning. We continue again along the moraine and camp at the foot off the Lobuje Ice Fall (4,930m).
Day 9 Lobuje 5 walking hrs
On this day, we climb Kala Patthar. The actual distance is not so far for this day but we wake up in the early morning and move forward to Gorek Shep where we take a rest. From here we have a steep ascent up to the top of the Kala Patthar top. The actual distance is not so far but we take it very slowly to make up for the altitude. This top (5,545m) is a hard pull but the view from the top surpasses anything you can imagine. All around us flow huge glaciers and the silence of these altitudes is only disturbed by the creaking of the mobile glacier ice. The mountains of Pumori (7,145m), Lingtren (6,697m) and Khumbutse (6,623m) separate us from Tibet and just over the Lho La pass we see the huge rock of Changtse (7,550m)in Tibet itself. But Sagarmatha or Mt. Everest the queen of them all towers over everyone. This is the roof of the world. We return to our camp at Gorekshep.
